Vintage Postcard of the Week #8

#8 - Tuck's Happy New Year

Front:

Back:

Raphael Tuck & Sons "New Year Postcards" Series No. 145
Art Publishers to their Majesties the King & Queen
Printed in Saxony (probably why some of it's in german; i.e. "postkarte")
by Appointment

"Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! From Marcella."
Sent to Miss Frances in 1910

***I love the coat of arms in the top left, it was used by the Tuck company for some time. The animal on the right is a Unicorn!
Tuck is one of the most recognized names in postcard publishing.  They produced a wide variety of cards and published an enormous amount of valentines.  The company began sometime in the late 1800s, founded by Raphael Tuck.  Designing was done in their London offices, while the cards were printed in Germany as were many of the cards produced prior to WWII.  I found many more Tuck cards at this site.
I especially like this one:

Fabric

So occasionally on here you've seen scraps of fabric that people have sent. That's because I've asked for scraps to make a quilt, inspired by this one:

It was made from scraps from her friends around the world.

Isn't that awesome?

So that's what I want to do!

Shivling

My very first swap-bot swap, for Newbies, was also Ayesha's first swap, and she sent me back a postcard!

"The Shivling Mountain which is of great significance in the Hindu mythology."

From wikipedia: " Its name refers to its status as a sacred symbol of the God - Lord Shiva's Shiva Linga."

Apparently this company published picture postcards from 1902 - 1914 (source).

The torn-up back is why people should never glue postcards into scrapbooks. Grr.

Swap-bot Thriftstore Find

Received my package for the Thriftstore Find #30 - USA swap!
It's from Sherry in Pennsylvania!

This is the front of the card
She took this picture last summer.
I love it when there's a note or letter with the swap!
Thanks for the letter!

Fabric for my quilt!!!
Both are vintage cotton.

A blank postcard:
Ornamented column, Archaeological Museums, Istanbul.
Marble, Byzanz, 5th c.

And the actual thriftstore find!
A pitcher and vase, super adorable.
I already put a flower in the vase, and I think the pitcher will be for creamer :)
Sorry for the terrible photo.

She also sent an owl card with envelope, but I plan on actually using that so I'll post it when I send it :)

And she recommends the book Modoc, a true story about a boy and his elephant.

Swap-bot Getting To Know You

This swap only had 1 partner each, and you were to write a letter answering a series of questions, and include a gift for that person. I sent a handwritten letter to Jana, included some of my vintage paper for her paper-crafts, and sent it in a handmade envelope.

I was SO outdone!

Kristy sent me a typed letter, and included a TON of stuff! In addition to a tea bag, she sent me all this stuff:
Some book recommendations on the back:

A hanging quote:

Two postcards based on the work of Isabel Samaras:
look closely at her "fur" wrap

And postcards she designed on photoshop:

I especially love this last one.
I love anything gnome :)
